The Clearly Podcast
The Current IT Job Market
Summary
In this week's Clearly Podcast our friend Jon Styles makes a second appearance to talk about the current job market. In season 1, episode 11 "So You Want To Be a Power BI Consultant", we talked about how to get skilled and approach the job market as a Power BI consultant. This episode continued that theme, albeit with a heavy focus on the current job market and what that means for candidates looking to move job or enter the market.
So what does the market look like right now?
As we come out of the pandemic restrictions there's high demand for experienced IT consultants across a broad range of disciplines.
In the implementation partner space which remains a big employer and currently has the highest demand, we're seeing poaching of staff between partners.
The demand for inexperienced individuals is far lower as employers want new hires that can be deployed on projects immediately.
What does this means for you?
If you're experienced, there's a thriving market out there.
If you're inexperienced we talk through some strategies to help you get into the current market.
Leverage your past experience. Do you have detailed vertical knowledge or professional skills that can be easily cross-trained?
Remember the basics of job hunting. Use a tailored and concise 2 page CV/Resume, do your research and prepare for interviews.
Work with 2-3 experienced and well connected recruiters.
We also discuss what feels like a continuing challenge with the job market - capacity. There simply isn't enough resource to meet the current demand. We've been here before and we suspect we'll be here again.

Andy: Welcome to our podcast. We have Jon Styles, a dynamics recruiter extraordinaire, with us. We'll discuss the current IT job market, specifically focusing on Power Platform and Dynamics, but also touching on the wider IT job market.
Jon: The job market has never been busier, especially for Microsoft Dynamics. COVID initially slowed things down, but now there's a surge in demand with companies fighting over fewer people. This issue is compounded by partners and resellers failing to bring in fresh talent, relying heavily on expensive contractors and overworking their current staff.
Andy: Shailan, from your perspective as an employer, how have you found the market?
Shailan: It's challenging. There are fewer applicants, and it's difficult to find the right candidates. However, we've successfully hired and cross-trained graduates, and they're doing well. Continuous development is key, not just initial training.
Jon: Partners often hesitate to hire junior staff due to the fear they will leave after being trained. However, companies that invest in their employees and offer proper development see better retention.
Andy: COVID has changed the job market significantly, particularly in terms of remote work.
Jon: Absolutely. Remote work has become more accepted, and companies are offering more flexibility, which benefits both employees and employers.
Andy: For those looking to change roles or enter the market, what are your top tips, Jon?
Jon: First, leverage LinkedIn—it's essential. Build relationships with recruiters, as they have a deep understanding of the market. Lastly, ensure your CV is concise and highlights your skills effectively.
Shailan: I'd add that doing your homework on potential employers is crucial. Also, actively work on developing relevant skills, even if you're not currently in the market for a new job.
Andy: How should candidates approach online interviews?
Jon: Treat it as a two-way conversation. Candidates should assess if the company is the right fit for them as much as the other way around. Being clear and concise is crucial, and remember, it's about finding the right match.
Andy: What are the differences between working for partners versus end-users?
Jon: End-users often offer a slower pace and more focused work on specific projects, while partners provide a variety of experiences across multiple projects. Both experiences are valuable, and having both can greatly enhance your career.
Shailan: Employers appreciate candidates who show initiative, whether it's through additional certifications or proactive learning. This demonstrates a strong work ethic and a willingness to grow.
Andy: Finally, let's round off with our top three tips for job seekers in the current market. Jon?
Jon: 1) Keep your CV short and impactful. 2) Treat interviews as a two-way conversation. 3) Network extensively within your industry.
Shailan: 1) Do thorough research on potential employers. 2) Continuously develop your skills. 3) Be proactive in your job search.
Andy: 1) Engage actively on LinkedIn. 2) Get certified to demonstrate your knowledge. 3) Maintain a positive attitude, which can take you far.
Andy: Thank you, Jon, for joining us today.
Jon: Thank you for having me.
Shailan: Thanks, Jon.
Andy: Signing off. Thank you, everyone.
